Senior Claims Examiner


A+ specialty carrier provides solutions for Excess and Surplus Lines Commercial Property and Casualty insurance coverage insuring unique or hard-to-place risks. Flexible policy terms and premium rates. Focus is small to medium Property and Casualty risks on both an admitted and a non-admitted basis.

Description / Responsibilities

Responsible for managing a case load of 60-75% litigated claims work of claims values roughly up to $250K. Handles intermediate-level, commercial first-party property and/or third-party general liability losses in a “paperless” environment. Ability to manage desk and possess a background handling litigated claims. Highly technical role handling national claims and must possess a strong and deep knowledge of claims handling with deep coverage experience and knowledge.Reviews and sets up new loss assignments. Establishes appropriate initial loss and expense reserves. Regularly evaluates files for adequacy, accuracy and adherence to reserving guidelines. Analyzes and interprets policy language in conjunction with specific loss facts to reach appropriate coverage decisions. Drafts coverage correspondence, including reservation of rights and coverage disclaimers. Composes a variety of other detailed correspondence to insureds, claimants, attorneys, agents and regulatory agencies. Proactively manages claim files from inception to closure. Documents all claim file activity. Consistently demonstrates coverage analysis, investigation, evaluation and negotiation skills at an intermediate level. Directs and controls the activities and costs of numerous outside vendors including independent adjusters, defense counsel and coverage counsel. Effectively presents and discusses loss facts and issues in roundtable discussions to peers and members of management. Remote work from home environment.


Seven (7) to ten (10) years in claims handling and/or claims litigation, commercial casualty, excess & surplus lines claims a strong plus. Carrier background strongly preferred but will consider a combination of carrier, TPA, background. An ability to communicate both verbally and in written form in a prompt, courteous and professional manner is essential. Degree preferred and will also consider J.D.s with strong claims defense work. Carrier background strongly preferred but can consider mix of TPA and carrier background. Intermediate knowledge of Windows environment, including Word, Excel and E-mail.
